If This Piece Could Talk
Discover the imagined lives of antique and vintage pieces from Marple Antiques, and the moments, people and stories they may have witnessed along the way.
Every antique and vintage piece has had a life before it reaches us.
It may have stood quietly on a dressing table, been brought out for special occasions, travelled from one home to another, or simply remained in the same family for generations. Some pieces arrive with their history carefully preserved. Others come to us with little more than the object itself.
And it is often those pieces that make me wonder.
Who chose it? Where did it sit? Was it treasured, used every day, given as a gift or saved for best? What conversations took place around it? What changes did it witness while the years quietly passed?
At Marple Antiques, I have always believed that part of the pleasure of living with antiques and vintage pieces lies in this connection with the lives that came before us. We can research a maker, identify a period and understand how something was made, but there will always be another history that cannot be found in a reference book — the human one.
If This Piece Could Talk grew from that idea.
In this collection of stories, we take antique and vintage pieces currently offered by Marple Antiques and imagine a moment from their past. The stories themselves are fictional, inspired by the age, character and purpose of each object rather than presented as documented provenance.
They are simply an invitation to look at an old object a little differently.
Because perhaps the small silver box sitting quietly in a cabinet once held something precious. Perhaps the porcelain cup on a breakfast table was part of a morning ritual. Perhaps a piece of jewellery was worn to an evening its owner remembered for the rest of her life.
We will never know.
But we can imagine.
And perhaps that is one of the reasons antiques and vintage pieces continue to fascinate us. We are not the first people to live with them, and if we care for them, we will not be the last.
The pieces featured in If This Piece Could Talk are drawn from the Marple Antiques collection and are available for purchase at the time their stories are published. As individual antique and vintage pieces are often one of a kind, some may find new homes quite quickly.
If a featured piece has already sold, we invite you to browse the Marple Antiques website, where there is always another collection of old and interesting things waiting to be discovered.
